New Poetry by BZ Niditch

IDES OF MARCH

Glossed underfoot
by the waters' foliage
half buried landscapes
between images
of the sun's clenched
flakes on branches
still speckled
at first light
on sleepless trees,
wet twigs of aspens
are mute as lichens
where a turnstile opens
over the deserted bridge
along a brackish river
near the home harbor
outside of Sydney
on the Tasman Sea
uncertain of your secrets
of fate, absence,silence
at an hour
on your self built boat
when the wind wanders
by the shore ripples
near sea memory voices
of waning bird song
on pine trees seen
above ditch water sand,
running the boardwalk
of a familiar bay
when a beached whale
floats upward
pale and unable to speak
you wish the wave
of Melville's hand
here in the South Pacific
to welcome departures
of the tide.
