New Poetry by Edward Lee

Your Future Argued As Your Present Ends

Seeing you everyday
I never noticed
the deep, dark caves
forming beneath your eyes.

It was only
as the nurse
gave us privacy
in the room, her head
nodding as her eyes met our own
before lowering to the ground,
that I saw the end
that was coming for you,
saw those caves
like collapsed structures
beneath your eyes,

the end that finally arrived
in your sleep an impossible
amount of days later,
your long-broken family,
hastily reassembled by your impending end,
outside, once again arguing
over your future,
each voice whispering
but still demanding to be heard.
